0:00 hi I'm Rick Ruder with news on the feed

0:02 Telecom operators are seeing their

0:05 traffic Skyrocket across their Metro

0:06 networks in a recent estimate from STL

0:09 Partners shows a three-fold increase by

0:10 2030. that's huge after a recent energy

0:14 crisis and growing environmental

0:16 concerns telcos are looking to implement

0:18 more sustainable practices to face these

0:21 challenges with me is Irene Zhang

0:23 director at Juniper Networks to

0:25 highlight the top sustainable Trends

0:27 Irene STL Partners recently asked telcos

0:30 in North America and Europe how they're

0:32 driving sustainability so what are the

0:35 common practices that most operators are

0:38 pursuing

0:39 yeah so from the research we noticed

0:41 that most operators right now are at the

0:44 stage of common practices essentially

0:46 they are chasing the low heading fruit

0:48 which include uh for example

0:50 decompositioning the Legacy technologies

0:53 that are more energy hungry for example

0:57 transitioning from copper networks to

1:00 fiber optics and also decommissioning

1:03 the Legacy 2G 3G networks and then

1:06 reforming the Spectrum

1:08 and uh in addition to that uh operators

1:12 are also looking at their facilities

1:14 looking at what are the things that are

1:17 unnecessarily streaming the extra

1:19 systems for example is there some vans

1:22 that are blocked is there doors that are

1:25 open when they're not supposed to so

1:28 they're really tracking those energy

1:29 usage and trying to optimize them

1:32 those are some great first steps and so

1:35 what comes after that

1:36 what comes to after that is what STL

1:39 Partners identify as best practices and

1:42 it is about applying Cloud principles to

1:44 Metro networks and that is what we call

1:47 Cloud Metro and the first principle is

1:49 about resource sharing in the context of

1:52 Metro that is about converging all the

1:55 different Metro Services onto one single

1:58 converge platform which reduce resource

2:01 duplication and also reduce the carbon

2:03 emissions associated with those resource

2:05 duplication

2:07 the second principle is about automation

2:09 imagine that you can use automation to

2:12 reduce human error and imagine that you

2:14 can use automation to do remote

2:17 troubleshooting so that directly you can

2:19 reduce the number of truck rows that you

2:21 need to send the staff to go on site and

2:25 fix those problems right and then by

2:27 reducing the truck row you directly

2:30 reducing the amount of energy and carbon

2:33 emission associated with that

2:35 that makes a lot of sense right is there

2:38 anything else Telecom operators should

2:40 be considering

2:41 absolutely so the next practices this

2:45 are not as common right now but we do

2:48 see them as promising in future so uh

2:52 for example one is decentralized routing

2:54 fabric which is the idea that you

2:56 terminated traffic at the edge so that

2:58 you reduce the overall traffic that

3:00 traversing the entire network and thus

3:03 reducing the total amount of traffic

3:07 um carbon emission associated with those

3:08 traffic and then the second is

3:11 re-architecting the current architecture

3:13 transitioning to the spine Leaf scale

3:16 out architecture which improve

3:18 resiliency and that when you improve

3:21 your resiliency that also will have

3:23 relationship relates to reduce the truck

3:25 roles uh for troubleshooting and last

3:28 but not least it is about evaluating and

3:31 enhancing their carbon vendor evaluation

3:34 criteria with the TCL model so today the

3:36 T cell model typically only associated

3:38 with cost and the recommendation is to

3:40 incorporate sustainability Matrix in the

3:43 evaluation so that they can actually

3:45 reward the vendors that provide

3:48 sustainable product design Irene you

3:51 just gave us a lot to think about thank

3:54 you so much for sharing your insights on
